The correct identification of cases and serotypes of Dengue is an ally for the clinical treatment of the different forms of presentation of the disease
In early May, Fiocruz announced the identification, for the first time, of a new type of dengue virus in Brazil. This is the cosmopolitan genotype of serotype 2, which is considered the most widespread in the world.
The dengue virus has four serotypes, listed as 1, 2, 3 and 4. Each of them can be subdivided into different genotypes. The cosmopolitan genotype is one of six serotype 2 strains of the pathogen. It is more transmissible and can cause even more severe symptoms.
The correct identification of cases and serotypes of Dengue is an ally for the clinical treatment of the different forms of presentation of the disease: asymptomatic, mild and severe, including fatal.
Laboratories need to have their routines monitored to ensure the efficiency of the analysis and to provide the reliability of the results. The release of assertive reports contributes to accurate medical decisions.
Releasing a reliable report, with confidence in distinguishing other viruses that cause symptoms that can be confused in a clinical diagnosis, is essential for the recognition of laboratory excellence.
Controllab, the largest Laboratory Quality Control company in Latin America, provides programs for Dengue, meeting the serological routines of IgG and IgM, NS1 Antigen and molecular biology in different methodologies.
The Dengue – Molecular Biology program includes the o Proficiency Testing (PT), also known as External Control. In this PT, participants report the serotype identified in the genotyping.
Controllab also offers the Sequencing PT: Viral Genome Detection. In it, different viruses of epidemiological interest are sent alternately for identification. Among them, the Dengue serotypes.
Quality Control for Dengue
Applying continuous monitoring (Internal Control) and periodic external comparison (External Control or Proficiency Testing) introduces reliability into analytical routines. The internal controls offered by Controllab are considered to be a third opinion (produced by manufacturers other than the analytical system itself). These are independent controls, which generally include interlaboratory results in different systems and reliably reproduce the performance of patient samples, providing an unbiased evaluation.
